Although this work of art is by Isaac Cruikshank, not James Gillray, both artists are concerned with racism (open racism). The year 1807 is significant! The Slave Trade Act was passed by the British Parliament on 25 March 1807, making the Atlantic chattel slave trade illegal throughout the British Empire. The Act imposed a fine of £100 for every slave found aboard a British ship. At a time when Napoleon decided to revive slavery, which had been abolished during the French Revolution and to send his troops to re-enslave the people of Haiti, Guadeloupe and the other French Caribbean possessions.
